Shop Local This Holiday Season!
We know that Black Friday and Cyber Monday are often associated with major retailers and online shopping but there are a ton of local businesses that need our support. Being a locally owned and operated business in the Boise area, we would like to encourage each of you to shop locally for those gifts rather than fulfill your shopping needs online or through a major department store. We have nothing against the advancements of e-commerce and the companies that have capitalized on them, we just love buying local first.
Buying local not only helps our own economy, families and employees, it helps our city grow. As businesses become more popular they outgrow their current storefronts, need to hire more employees and generate tax revenue that helps update our infrastructure, improve our schools and provide services for the people that need help. Boise has some amazing locally owned stores that we’re sure will provide you with gifts everyone will love!
The first store on our list is Mixed Greens in downtown Boise. If you haven’t been to Mixed Greens yet, you’re missing out. This store has a large variety of items that will make everyone on your shopping list happy. From locally made paintings, wall hangings and jewelry to candles, soaps, lotions and other cosmetic items. The have a large variety of plants that require little to no maintenance and look great too! If nothing else, we highly recommend you buy every greeting card for the rest of your life at Mixed Greens, they are almost all made locally and you’re sure to find one for every occasion.
If your recipient is an outdoor enthusiast there are multiple shops to choose from no matter what your budget or preferred activity is! Idaho River Sports is located near Quinn’s Pond and has a ton of equipment for sale, and rentals, for anyone that loves to enjoy the beautiful bodies of water we’re blessed with in Idaho. They also have many gift certificate options for their stand-up paddle board rentals, classes, and much more!
Idaho Mountain Touring, George’s Cycles, the Outdoor Exchange and Backcountry Pursuit are all located downtown and are sure to have something your friends or family members will love! Idaho Mountain Touring has outdoor gear for mountain bikers, trail runners, rock climbers, campers, skiers and everything in between. George’s Cycles has been the go-to bike shop of Boise since 1971! The Outdoor Exchange and Backcountry Pursuit are great places to find used and consigned outdoor gear!
Next on our list is Idaho Made. This wonderful store brings the work of local artists to the downtown area and their business model is very innovative. Artists pay a monthly rent and work a certain number of hours in the store each month, they are then able to keep the money from their individual sales without having to pay gallery fees or a percentage of the sale. You can find everything from paintings, clothing, glasswork, Idaho themed artwork, candles and much more! You’re sure to find something for everyone at this wonderful local store.
The next store is one that has been a part of downtown Boise for as long as we can remember. Dragonfly is an eclectic shop that has a little bit of everything. Greeting cards, gag gifts for your white elephant parties, clothing, jewelry, artwork and more. They’ve been a local staple since 1983 when they opened their doors for the first time. They’re conveniently located across the street from Blue Sky Bagels so when you’re done shopping you can get the best bagel in Boise!
If you would like to purchase or send flowers to someone for holiday dinners or arrangements, we have tons of local florists to choose from! The Florist at Edwards, J. Michaels Flowers, Blooms Flower Studio, Wildflower, and HeavenEssence Floral and Gifts are just a few of the options. We love giving and receiving flowers during the holidays and these florists have so much talent and creativity they bring to each unique arrangement they make. The Florist at Edwards is a part of Edwards Greenhouse which has been a gardening and decoration staple for a very long time, all the plants in our office came from Edwards!
So, if you’re planning on doing some shopping for friends or loved ones in the coming days or weeks you now have plenty of local options! Supporting local businesses is such an important thing to do, we’re helping our community grow, putting food on the table of many families in the area and leading by example. If you own a local business and are in need of insurance products or advice, stop by or give us a call and we’d be happy to provide the same level of service that you do for your customers.
